There is a universal, archetypical running form. Nature gives us a blueprint—a blueprint that, to the detriment of runners everywhere, has been largely ignored.

Training, at first glance, looks like a straightforward schedule of workouts to develop a new level of running capacity. And this is true, but it is also about developing your confidence and perception. A training program builds your confidence step-by-step. It’s a process of discovering how your mind and body are handling the load. In a well-designed program you learn to recognize your fatigue threshold, improve focus, and keep negative thoughts at bay.
At the heart of any training program are measurables. Measurables are data points you use to document your progress, evaluate your methods, and prevent overtraining. They track your running speed for a given workout, your distance covered at various speeds, and the number of miles you’ve clocked.
