Frame of Reference
A frame of reference is a defined set of conditions, assumptions, and constants used to observe, measure, and interpret motion or behavior within a system.
Multiple frames of reference can be applied to the same system simultaneously. Each frame highlights different variables and answers different questions. However, frames of reference are not equivalent in function.
For any coherent model, one frame of reference serves as the primary frame, establishing the fundamental conditions under which the system operates. Other frames function as secondary frames, describing behavior, relationships, or outcomes within those primary conditions.
Clarity depends on maintaining this hierarchy. When secondary frames are treated as primary, interpretation becomes inconsistent and conclusions lose explanatory power.
